Among the more obscure of Victor Hugo`s novels, first published in 1866, TOILERS OF THE SEA is about a man who must free a ship that has gone aground. In return for his labors, he will win the hand of the ship owner`s beautiful daughter. The novel is richly detailed with the minutiae of nautical life in the mid-19th century.
